    • Andrew Macnab, MD (London), FRCPC, FRCPCH, is the Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of British Columbia and medical director of the Transport Program for British Columbia's Children's and Women's Hospital in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

The words “Out of Africa” are most often associated with the title of Karen Blixen's popular book1 and the Hollywood version of her life story and as such have a romantic connotation. However, for anyone who requires evacuation or repatriation because of serious illness and injury while in Africa, these words take on an urgent and more serious meaning. Fortunately, the “Flying Doctors” are available to this patient group and able to provide comprehensive air medical transport and care.
